The Association seeks to preserve, promote and enhance a vibrant, growing and stable community by identifying, articulating and serving the needs of membership. Originally named The North Central Association, the Association was formed in 1912 to provide unity and vision for the area. The Association's name changed to The Greater North Michigan Avenue Association in 1942 to reflect the neighborhood's physical expansion of retail merchants, banks, real estate firms, office buildings and service organizations on the near north side. Eighty-seven years later, the Association retains its original community spirit as volunteer led committees collaborate to preserve, promote and enhance the neighborhood through urban planning and advocacy, marketing and public relations and member events and programs. In addition, GNMAA continues to spotlight and promote this geographical area both locally and nationally. The Association has been the catalyst of a movement transforming a quiet retail and residential enclave into one of the most unique and dynamic urban communities in the world.
