Cary is a village in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 15,531 at the 2000 census. A 2003 special census put the village's population at 17,827. As of 2007 it has grown significantly because of the mass of new houses, due to avaricious developers and individuals seeking a "small town atmosphere" in the midst of urban sprawl. According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 5.3 square miles (13.8 km²), of which, 5.2 square miles (13.6 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km²) of it (1.13%) is water. Demographics As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 15,531 people, 4,962 households, and 4,108 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,956.3 people per square mile (1,142.2/km²). There were 5,037 housing units at an average density of 958.8/sq mi (370.4/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 95.53% White, 0.39% African American, 0.15% Native American, 1.35% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.84% from other races, and 0.71% from two or more races/ethnicities. Hispanic or Latino/Latina of any race were 5.43% of the population. There were 4,962 households out of which 52.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 72.9% were married couples living together, 7.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 17.2% were non-families. 14.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.12 and the average family size was 3.48. In the village the population was spread out with 34.8% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 33.8% from 25 to 44, 19.4% from 45 to 64, and 6.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 97.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.7 males. The median income for a household in the village was $76,801, and the median income for a family was $82,568. Males had a median income of $58,077 versus $32,851 for females. The per capita income for the village was $26,903. About 0.8% of families and 1.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 0.6% of those under age 18 and 3.4% of those age 65 or over.
