Abingdon is a city located in Knox County, Illinois, 50 miles (80 km) west of Peoria. The city was first settled in 1828 and was incorporated in 1857. In 1890, 1,321 people lived here; in 1900, 2,022; and in 1910, 2,464. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,612.
 
 Abingdon Geography:
 Abingdon is located at 40°48'13" North, 90°24'3" West (40.803572, -90.400770).
 According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.8 km2 (1.5 mi2). 3.8 km2 (1.5 mi2) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.
 
 Abingdon Demographics:
 As of the census of 2000, there are 3,612 people, 1,422 households, and 984 families residing in the city. The population density is 955.2/km2 (2,475.1/mi2). There are 1,535 housing units at an average density of 405.9/km2 (1,051.9/mi2). The racial makeup of the city is 98.12% White, 0.55% African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 0.80% from two or more races. 1.14% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
 There are 1,422 households out of which 31.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.1% are married couples living together, 10.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.8% are non-families. 26.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 2.99.
 In the city the population is spread out with 25.8% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 16.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.3 males.
 The median income for a household in the city is $35,642, and the median income for a family is $40,337. Males have a median income of $31,042 versus $20,343 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,711. 9.9% of the population and 6.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.1% of those under the age of 18 and 13.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
