More than 30 women answered this plea which appeared in the local newspapers over 100 years ago. Those women formed the Elgin Woman's Club. And, with "Progress" as their motto, their first project was to establish and run a hospital in the booming and prosperous town of Elgin.

Sherman Hospital opened its doors on July 7, 1888 in a two-story house donated by local drug store owner and prominent businessman, Henry Sherman. There were four beds and one operating room. After numerous additions between 1895 and 1999, the hospital has grown to 353 beds and is one of the largest medical facilities in the far northwest suburbs of Chicago.
A major event in Sherman's history was in 1972 when the first open-heart surgery was performed at the hospital. It was also one of the first open heart surgeries performed in a community hospital in the country. Today, Sherman is the recognized regional heart center for the northwest suburbs ranking third in the Chicagoland area in patient volumes for open-heart surgery. Other Sherman Centers of Excellence include trauma and emergency services, the Sherman Birthing Center with high-risk services and a special care nursery, orthopedic care, cancer care services and a comprehensive diabetes center.
We're proud to announce our plans to further our commitment to quality healthcare by building a replacement hospital. We broke ground on the replacement hospital in June 2006. The construction is scheduled to be completed in 2009. Click here to see our progress.
