Our Mission Erikson Institute is an independent institution of higher education that prepares child development professionals for leadership. Through its academic programs, applied research, and community service and engagement, Erikson advances the ability of practitioners, researchers, and decision makers to improve life for children and their families. The Institute is a catalyst for discovery and change, continually bringing the newest scientific knowledge and theories of children's development and learning into its classrooms and out to the community so that professionals serving children and families are informed, inspired, and responsive.
Our Vision Our vision is that every adult who works with young children is knowledgeable, aware, skilled, and alive to the possibilities that each child presents. We passionately believe in helping every child reach his or her potential and supporting children and families in every way possible, and we believe that we are uniquely qualified as educators, researchers, and citizens to realize this vision.
By the year 2007, we will be nationally recognized as a hub of complex, creative thinking, and as having expertise that contributes to shaping programs and policies affecting young children. We will be more frequently called upon to consult and advise and our research will inform practice from coast to coast. We envision that our models will be replicated, especially in urban and multicultural settings, and demand for our graduates will increase. By expanding our reach and marketing Erikson as a source of quality and innovation, we will produce more Erikson-trained practitioners who will, in turn, impact more children and e
families.
Our Values The history and development of the institute reveal a remarkably stable and cohesive set of values that are shared by Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, and students. They are: Relationship-based education. The Erikson approach to education recognizes the centrality of relationships in all learning. Commitment to social justice. Erikson seeks to contribute to a significant improvement in education and services for all children and all families. Diversity. Erikson prepares professionals to work with populations that vary in age, race, ethnicity, and physical and mental abilities. Complexity. The institute seeks to appreciate the various biological, psychological, cultural, historical, and social factors that influence each child. High standards and excellence. Graduates consistently report Erikson’s academic programs to be exacting but more than worth the effort. Faculty are experts in their field and continually seek to stay abreast of the latest research. Nondiscrimination policy
It is the policy of Erikson Institute not to discriminate against any individual on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, age, disability, or veteran status in matters of admissions, employment, or services or in the educational programs or activities it operates, in accordance with civil rights legislation and institutional commitment.
